How to set-up your paid Doteasy domain to your free Byethost web hosting!

Doteasy Member Zone Log-in Button
Doteasy Member Zone Log-in Button

Ever since I bought my new domain aaronlecciones.com from Doteasy I’ve been wanting to make it point to my free Byethost account. I’ve already learned how to make subdomains in my Byethost account, and as a temporary measure since I was so confused with A Names and C Names I went and used the URL Forwarding function of my Doteasy account. Of course I was not happy with that. I wanted a more authorative, official and permanent solution. So I found this website as a guide (how to do the same thing here but on a free co.cc account and a free byethost account) and now I have a little tutorial for those who want to make their Doteasy accounts point to the more robust and free Byethost.com:

STEP 1: CONFIGURE DOTEASY DOMAIN

(1) First thing to do is log-in to your Doteasy account by going to the Member Zone, log-in button should look like the picture on the upper right. Some notes before we begin, when I bought my domain I got a free 100mb hosting plan, I chose this. Most likely even the paid accounts have the same options in the control panel, in my case I just have the abilities disabled.

Your doteasy member log-in homepage should look something like this:

Find hosting table near the bottom inside the Doteasy Hosting Options and (2) click on CHANGE WEBHOST (green highlight, my watermark obscures this!)When you have loaded that page a status will indicate: “wait while it says loading nameservers..”
Once done, at “change webhost” (3) change name servers to:

ns1.byet.org
ns2.byet.org
ns3.byet.org
ns4.byet.org
(*you may use ns5.byet.org in place of any of those four also)

Fill in your details at Change Tech Contact if desired
(4) Click Ok and it will say loading …please wait, when it says:
“Thank You Change request received. Please allow 48 hours for processing.

(5) Then you should confirm that your changes took effect.

Please note that you’ll to be extra vigilant with this step before you even start doing anything to your byethost account. It can take anywhere up to 48 (or possibly 72) hours for DNS records to propagate across the net, so you will have to wait and confirm the changes before you proceed to the next step if you want to make this work.

You can check if your settings worked by visiting the WHOIS record under your Domain table in doteasy after two days. It should point to the name servers we specified.

STEP 2: CONFIGURE BYETHOST ACCOUNT

The first thing to do is to add our domain to our account. Go to panel.byethost.com, log in, and you’re presented with your web administration interface.

Under the ‘Domains’ subsection, you want to click ‘Add-On Domains.’ This is where you add a domain name that you’ve obtained on your own, rather than through byethost. Once you click there, you’ll be presented with a form in which you can enter your domain; so enter mydomain.co.cc, click ‘add domain” and the following message should appear:

“Congratulations you have now added a new domain to your vPanel.
Due to a process known as ‘DNS Propagation’ it may take upto 76 hours before the domain name works globally. Until DNS has fully propagated the sitebuilder may not work, also browsing to the domain may not work. Please do not create a support ticket for a domain that has been added within the 76 hour period, 99% of domain issues will be resolved by waiting this period of timeHappy Hosting ! “

Your domain will be added to byethost’s DNS records, and a directory for your domain will be created. So, for our imaginary case, you’ll now have a directory called mydomain.co.cc; your html files will live in the subdirectory mydomain.co.cc/htdocs. You may have to wait a little while for the DNS to update, but not always.

STEP 3: TESTING AND TROUBLESHOOTING

Now we need to make sure nothing went wrong. Upload a basic ‘index.html’ to your htdocs directory under your new domain (e.g. xxx.byethost.com/www.domain.com/htdocs), and type your domain (e.g.www.domain.com) into your web browser. You should see your page! If not, there are a few things that could have gone wrong.

For me I already had previously uploaded my website so all I did was move them from there original location inside my byethost account to the newly created folder for my paid doteasy domain. If you need help moving just ask and I’ll help you out there!

By the way, this part I’m not so sure as it’s still propagating, but if you have a subdomain, for example A Name record *.aaronlecciones.com should point to my byethost account, but what if I have another website blog.aaronlecciones.com that is my personal blog, how do I make it point to another of my subdomains in Byethost? Didn’t work! Check out the EDIT at the bottom of the page!

Well first log-in your control panel, then look for the DNS Management Option, like below:

Then inside select your doteasy domain and type in the subdomain who want it to have in the source field, then point it to one of your subdomains on Byethost for the destination!! I think it’s that easy!

Hope you found this helpful!

EDIT: to add a subdomain such as blog.aaronlecciones.com go to the add subdomain in your byethost control panel and add the subdomain.  You will then be given a new subdomain blog.aaronlecciones.com with it’s correspoding ftp folder /blog.aaronlecciones.com/htdocs, where you can relocate or locate your wordpress (if you use wordpress) blog.
